A Buzzy Make-Along
In an effort to help raise awareness of the critical mission behind World Bee Day, I am hosting a bee themed make-along all month long!
Simply choose any bee themed fiber craft related project and get to work! There are so many possibilities. You can crochet a bee plushy, embroider a bee onto a garment, or perhaps choose a knit design that features a colorwork bee motif.
I will be casting on the Melliferra Cowl by Jamie Lomax. This is a two stranded colorwork design that is knit in the round and features mix and match bee themed motifs including honeycombs and bees for a unique project that is completely your own. It requires two skeins of DK weight yarn in contrasting colors.
I put together a bunch of fun color combinations for you to choose from and for the next week I will include a digital copy of the pattern with each kit purchase. Purchase kits Here.
Make sure to tag your projects with #buzzymakealong on social media so that we can swarm the interwebs and help save the bees!
Ellis 100% Made in New York
Ellis is versatile lace weight yarn, spun with a balanced blend of domestically produced Rambouillet and Finn wool that together create a truly luxurious yarn with just a touch of rustic. This 2 ply yarn is slightly heavier than a typical lace weight yarn and works well on a variety of needle sizes and in a wide array of projects to create a remarkable fabric that is ultra-soft with a lofty bounce.
From sheep to skein, this yarn is 100% made in New York State. The wool was ethically produced by small NYS farms that pledge to sustainably practices, the fiber was spun at Battenkill Fiber Mill in Greenwhich, NY and the yarn was hand dyed by me in Fairport, NY.
Organic Merino Sport
Organic Merino Sport is an extra fine Certified Organic Merino wool yarn that supports sustainable farming practices while directly benefitting the small scale shepherds that raise this wool with reliable and fair income. This non-superwash yarn is available in over 20 inspiring colorways. In this entry I talk all about how this yarn was sustainably produced along with my ever growing list of project inspiration that I am eager to make with this yarn.
A Flurry of Fiber Events are in the Forecast.
The Fiber Flurry returns to in-person this Saturday, April 30th, in Wyoming, NY. The Fiber Flurry is a small fiber festival hosted by the Arts Council for Wyoming County. There is still time to sign-up for one of the many workshops hosted by some of the areas most renowned makers including spinning, felting, and knitting classes. Plan for lunch at the Wyoming Inn for a full day of relaxing fun with friends.
Illumination
Illumination was named for the luminating shine the addition of silk gives to this single ply yarn. To say that is it stunning is an understatement. The speckles seem to just pop off the yarn in a dance of color unlike any other yarn. It calls to be caked up and created into something beautiful.
Working with this yarn has renewed my love affair with single-ply yarn especially silk blends. For now this small collection will be all that is available, but I am hopeful that you will fall in love with this yarn as much as I have so that I can perhaps make this a permanent member of the yarn shop.
Marble Mount
The Marble Mount pullover, designed by Joji Locatelli, is a circular yoke sweater knit top down and in the round. I love the elegant femininity that the lace detail adds to this otherwise simple design. This pattern is incredibly versatile allowing you to craft as simple or bold a design as you want. When knit in a stately black or charcoal grey, this garment instantly becomes a staple piece for any capsule wardrobe. Choose a variegated colorway such as what I selected to create a head turning piece that can take you from office to happy hour with ease.
What is Superwash Yarn
If you have been fiber crafting for any amount of time you have probably come across the term superwash yarn, but what exactly is superwash yarn, and more importantly, what is the environmental impact of superwash yarn? In today’s journal entry we break down exactly how our superwash yarn is processed and how we ensure that our yarn is responsibly produced.
